Vented hot water cylinders, sometimes referred to as open-vented cylinders, are used in gravity fed systems with a feed and expansion tank in the loft.
Vented cylinders rely on gravity for pressure. The higher the cold water tank is above the cylinder the better your water pressure will be. This is why the tank is usually located in the loft space or attic.
Unvented hot water cylinders are used for pressurised systems where the water is fed from the mains supply.
